First PCs start “2nd Life“

Social Computer Circular Economy of Waidhofen (SCCE) provide for a second life cycle of first IT devices

On Tuesday, September 11 at the RIZ Waidhofen, the time had come: Project initiators Mr. Thomas Knapp (IMC) and Franz Rybaczek (KOMUNITAS OG) took over first used IT devices. The computers will be prepared for a second life cycle in the coming weeks by the social project of "GESA's". Director of the RIZ Center, Gregor Haslinger, was revealed as the first participant of the "Social Computer Circular Economy": He handed over two computers with keyboard and accessories.

PCs from enterprises, flat screens, laptops, keyboards and PC mice are received on every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at the RIZ Waidhofen by IMC staff members. Subsequently, the data are deleted according to international standards by staff members of the GESA social institution in St. Poelten, the devices are formatted and staged. SCCE participants receive a corresponding documented evidence about delivery of the devices and correct deletion of all data. The staged and repaired IT devices can be delivered at a cheap price to social institutions, low-income and ecology-minded persons in this region. A distribution network for "2nd-life devices" is currently being established. Sites of distribution at Waidhofen/Ybbs and Amstetten are scheduled from October onwards.

"We know that there is demand at Waidhofen and in the surrounding area. Only recently, the kindergarten of the monastery enquired about used computers. In the future, we can answer the question of many customers, where they should dispose of serviceable used computers, we can sensibly use old PCs, and help organizations and private persons acquire cheap and properly functioning devices", states IMC Dir. Thomas Knapp with pleasure.

The use of eight devices at the Reichenauerhof proves that this system is working. Within the framework of the previous pilot project, the devices have been revitalized and currently are used for the pupils and tutors at trainings in EDP, when writing letters of application, or for searching the web.

"PCs which are no longer efficient enough for economic enterprises, are turned into absolutely properly functioning "2nd life" computers. This is a pleasure for the participating enterprise or organization, the environment and, certainly, the future users of the revitalized devices", so Franz Rybaczek, who is convinced about this project, which is also supported by the Department of Social Affairs of the Province of Lower Austria.
